The Vexation of Credibility
Credibility was a handsome, respected young man. He loved making friends from all walks of life. However, recently, it seemed that he was losing some friends’ trust. They just kept him at arm’s length, which upset him very much. He wanted to find out the reason why.He went to the old friend Jim. Jim was an orange-seller. Their acquaintance was rather incidental. That was the very time when Jim had the first try in selling fruit. An elderly women paid a 100 RMB as a 10 one by mistake. Jim, without any hesitation, returned it. Credibility happened to see this and their friendship began. However, nowadays, Credibility frequently hears the gossip that Jim is used to giving short weight. ‘Well, it may be a rumor’ Credibility comforted himself. But to his surprise, Jim turned to be cold and indifferent to him. Fumbling about in his case, Jim fished out several fake notes. ‘You see, this is the thanks I have received from honest selling. After so many lessons, I have got to be weary not to be fooled.’ ‘But, Jim, there still remains so many trustworthy people, we should not take an eye for an eye. After all, in the long run, it is the credible who gets rewarded…”With a rather sophisticated air, Jim interrupted him bluntly, ‘There is not pure land, and be practical-minded, you fool. You must have some change, change, you got it? Otherwise, you will be…”Before he finished his lecture, Credibility turned and walked away silently.
Feeling at loss, Credibility strolled by a window of a shabby house. A man was heard speaking eloquently on the phone. “Our food company has enjoyed great reputation. There is really nothing for you to worry about. We have great capacity to… ’ The voice sounded familiar and Credibility recognized that it was John. He knew this guy very well, yet he also knew well that his small company’s great reputation was coming from their notorious use of the smelly leftover materials. He heaved a long sigh and shook his head. There is something heavy in his heart.
Now, he thought of his girlfriend, a sweet and sincere college girl. So he went into the beautiful college campus. This was where he loved best. It was pure, elegant, and tranquil. Unfortunately, he saw her busy leafing through a variety of books, tying to find something that could be copied down. He was shocked and felt hurt. Determined, he said goodbye to her, and went away, not knowing where to go.
‘You fool!’ Jim’s voice kept dinning in his ears. The noise seemed to get louder and louder. He could not bear it, and put his hands over his ears painfully.
