地道美語:red carpet treatment 貴賓式待遇

集團老總要來，全廠上下忙個不停，又是安排會場，鋪上地毯，又是準備盛宴，好不忙乎，這讓我想起了一個片語：red carpet

 treatment(welcome).

先看一個例子：

Wherever the star went, he was given a red carpet welcome by his movie fans.

（那明星的所到之處，都受到他影迷的熱烈歡迎。）.

Red carpet treatment意思是貴賓式的待遇，而red carpet welcome指貴賓式的歡迎。一般在接見重要人物時，接待單位總是鋪上

紅地毯以表隆重和熱烈，所以這種“紅地毯待遇”就表示“貴賓式的待遇”了。英文老師這樣解釋：

In west culture, people rool out a red carpet for an important people to walk on when they arrive. For example,

important people such as an embassador, a movie star or an honorable guest. So to give someone the red carpet

treatmetnt means that you give them special treatment.

Let’s take a look at the following examples from the internet:

Dr. Taylor Wang, the first Chinese astronaut, was given the red-carpet treatment at his alma mater.

(中國的第一位太空人王贛駿博士在他的母校受到隆重而熱烈的歡迎。)

When the president visited the foreign countries, he was given the red-carpet treatment and welcomed by a great

crown.

(當總統訪問外國時，他得到了隆重的款待及多數群眾的熱烈歡迎。)

注意，這個片語有時也用作roll out the red carpet to sb. 意思相同，上文中英文老師的解釋里就這樣用到。

下面來看一看今天要學習的第二個片語：when in Rome, do as the Romans do

你喜歡西方人的就餐習慣嗎？在美國，他們總是先上湯，后上主菜，而在我們中國，湯卻是最后一道需要上的菜，不管怎樣，我們

到了一個陌生的國度，總得要“入鄉隨俗”。對了，這就是when in Rome, do as the Romans do，即conform to the manners

and customs of those amongst whom you live.從字面意義上看（literally）,這個片語的意思是當身處羅馬時，要像羅馬人那

樣做，意思就是你到一個地方時，由于文化傳統的差異，你需要按照人家的風俗習慣行事。The sentence “When in Rome, do

as the Romans do” means that we should obey its customs when we are entering a country.看個例子：

The differences in customs and cultures in the world are really noticeable. We should learn more about them to

avoid them to avoid embarrassment(窘迫). Then, would you please remember: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

（世界上的風俗和文化的不同很值得注意。我們應該多注意一點一，以避尷尬。所以請記住：入鄉隨俗。）
